Your Willpower Muscle

Happy Musician Strategy

THE STRATEGY

Exercise Your Willpower Muscle

Think of willpower like a muscle. Just like a muscle you need to work it out to maintain its strength. So, how do you work out your willpower muscle?

THE SCIENCE

What is willpower? willpower is the ability to resist short-term temptations and desires in order to achieve long-term goals. It’s the prevailing source of long-term satisfaction over instant gratification.

According to APA (American Psychological Association), most psychology researchers define willpower as:

  • The ability to delay gratification and resist short-term temptations to meet long-term goals;

  • The capacity to override an unwanted thought, feeling, or impulse;

  • The conscious, effortful regulation of the self, by the self;

  • A limited resource capable of being depleted.

Because we will never always have willpower, it's important to recognize when we have the most and the least amount of willpower. For example, I practice my music and schedule my most physically demanding practicing and activities in the morning. I know. by four o'clock my willpower is starting to weaken. I'll start finding all kinds of things to do instead of what I should.

The workout

  • Improve Self-awareness: Self-awareness is the ability to recognize what we are doing as we’re doing it.

  • Meditate - this helps train your brain for better self-control

  • Physically Work out - It's scientifically proven that even moderate physical activity significantly boosts willpower.

  • Don't overdo it: remember everything in moderation, don't become a self-controlaholic.

Willpower is important but not the only tool in your tool chest. use it wisely.
